Banyuwangi - Erick Thohir asked for the expansion of sugarcane planting area to boost domestic sugar production. The expansion of the land will be carried out by involving people's sugarcane and increasing the area of sugarcane plantations owned by Perhutani. Erick targets the area of sugarcane plantations in 2024-2025 to reach 250 thousand hectares. This was revealed during a working visit at PT Industri Sugar Glenmore under the management of PT Perkebunan Nusantara XII, Saturday (18/9/2021).

Erick was accompanied by Muhammad Abdul Gani, President Director of PTPN III, as Plantation Holding, Director of PTPN XII, Siwi Peni and former Banyuwangi Regent, Abdullah Azwar Anas.

Erick said the restructuring carried out by PTPN XII had given maximum results by improving finances and providing benefits, so that in order to achieve self-sufficiency in sugar consumption, collaboration with the people and other agencies is needed.

"I ask to involve the people's sugar cane and land owned by Perhutani so that there is an increase in production land from 45 thousand hectares to 85 thousand, then slowly until 2024-2025 it must become 250 thousand hectares. If this is achieved, then Indonesia's dream of becoming a sugar exporting country will come true," he said.

Erick Thohir added, under the management of PT Perkebunan Nusantara XII, PT IGG has transformed into a modern sugar factory with advanced technology. This is expected to contribute to the realization of self-sufficiency in sugar consumption for Indonesia. With the entire land area managed by plantation holdings, Indonesia must become a country with a solid sugar industry strength.

"With sugar production that continues to increase and also the application of modern technology in this industry, I hope PT IGG becomes part of the effort to achieve self-sufficiency in consumption sugar," he said.

"This is part of food security. Moreover, the road map regarding the realization of self-sufficiency in sugar consumption in the future already exists and President Joko Widodo provides support. Although there are many challenges, we must run Lillahi Ta'ala," said Erick Thohir.

Even though the private sector still needs the role, it is time for state-owned companies engaged in the sugar cane and sugar plantation businesses to join in one holding to realize the old dream.

Currently, there are seven PTPN subsidiaries engaged in the sugar cane industry, one of which is PT IGG which is a subsidiary of PTPN XII.

Erick Thohir continues to pursue the desire to increase exports and reduce imports, especially for commodities that are owned and become Indonesia's wealth.

"It's time we don't just become a market that will make it difficult for our country. With the potential we have, how can sugar become an important economic backbone in the future," concluded Erick.
